Police cites Vijay’s extended stay inside vehicle as reason for unrest
The police have blamed actor-turned-politician Vijay’s long stay inside his campaign vehicle for the stampede that occurred in Karur. According to the FIR filed, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader’s delay caused the crowd to grow restless and overcrowded as people waited to see him during the Saturday rally, reported PTI.
Authorities said a huge number of people had gathered, and the narrow venue couldn’t handle the crowd. As excitement built, many in the audience surged forward to catch a glimpse of Vijay, causing panic and pushing among those in front. The situation worsened when some people climbed trees and metal sheds for a better view. These structures couldn’t bear the weight and collapsed, falling on the crowd and sparking chaos. Many were injured due to being crushed or suffocated in the commotion, the FIR stated. To regain control, the police had to use lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
NDA delegation to visit Karur
Meanwhile, an NDA delegation, led by Mathura MP Hema Malini, will visit the incident site to ascertain the cause of the incident. The delegation members will also meet the affected families and submit a report to BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda.
