Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, renowned classical vocalist, passes away in UP’s Mirzapur, PM Modi expresses grief

Famed Hindustani classical vocalist, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, passed away at around 4:00 am on Thursday (October 2) in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur after a prolonged illness. The 89-year-old maestro had been under medical care for the past several months. His daughter, Namrata Mishra, confirmed the news of his demise over the phone to the media.

On the demise of her father and classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, Namrata Mishra said, “My father took his last breath today at 4:30 am. The doctor’s team arrived and checked him earlier today. He was ill for a long time. He was admitted to the ICU earlier, and later, we were advised to take him home. Every arrangement was made at home for his treatment.”

Journey to Varanasi for final rites

Pandit Mishra’s mortal remains will be brought from Mirzapur to Varanasi later in the afternoon. The final rites are scheduled to take place tonight at the Manikarnika Ghat, one of the most revered cremation sites in the holy city.

Singer Chhannulal Mishra, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, was earlier admitted to the ICU of Sir Sunderlal Hospital affiliated with the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), after he suffered a heart-related issue and was treated for a lack of haemoglobin and bed sores.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of legendary classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra. Remembering him as a lifelong devotee of Indian art and culture, the Prime Minister said Mishra not only brought classical music closer to the masses but also played a pivotal role in showcasing Indian traditions on the global stage. Modi recalled his personal association with the maestro, noting that Pandit Mishra had affectionately blessed him over the years and was also his proposer from the Varanasi seat in 2014. Conveying heartfelt condolences, he extended sympathy to Mishra’s family and admirers, praying for peace to his soul. Om Shanti.
